About Forbes House
As Lake County's only Domestic Violence Shelter, Forbes House opened for
battered women and their children in 1980. Grants
from the Lake County Mental Health Board,
Western Reserve Junior Service League, and
the Forbes Foundation paid for the renovations
of the home.
In 1989, with the assistance of the Lake County
Commissioners, Forbes House received HUD
funds for the purchase and renovation of its
current building. On April 16, 1990 Forbes
House moved to the new shelter. As a result,
we were able to increase our capacity from 17
residents to 30 residents.
In 2012, Forbes House provided:
-
Information or assistance for 2321 Crisis Callers,
-
Housing for 88 women and 61 children, amounting to 6604 total bed nights,
-
Legal intakes or Civil Protection Order assistance for 342 women,
-
Transitional housing for 16 women and 22 children,
-
assistance for 66 support group members.
For more than 30 years the Forbes House mission has been "to relieve the trauma resulting from domestic violence, to assure access to safe and caring environments for its victims, and to foster an end to domestic violence through education, prevention, and advocacy".
Forbes House is also funded in part by the Lake County Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services (ADAMHS) Board.
